About

Hello, I’m Jan Small. I was born and raised in Hammond, Louisiana, where I earned my Bachelor of Science before heading to Indiana to complete my Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology (often called speech therapy).Over the past 17+ years, I’ve had the privilege of working across a wide range of settings. I spent more than 9 years serving students in school systems in Louisiana and Florida, and 8 years working in Skilled Nursing Facilities in Florida, supporting adults and the elderly population. These experiences have shaped my flexible, client-centered approach to therapy and deepened my appreciation for communication across the lifespan. Outside of work, I married my wonderful husband in 2021 and became a mom to our daughter in 2023 and our son in 2025. They are my greatest joy—and the driving force behind everything I do each day. Supporting families, empowering communication, and celebrating progress (big and small) is not just my profession; it’s my passion.

I am the founder of Small Steps Speech Therapy. I created this private practice to offer families something different-speech therapy that feels personal, flexible, and genuinely supportive. In a private practice setting, I’m able to take the time to truly get to know each child/adult and family. Therapy is individualized, play-based or more structured (better for older children and adults), and thoughtfully designed around your child’s strengths, needs, and everyday routines. There’s no cookie-cutter approach here-just intentional, meaningful work that supports real progress.

As a mom of two, I understand how important it is to feel heard and confident in the care your child receives. My goal is to partner closely with families, celebrate small victories, and create a therapy experience that feels encouraging, manageable, and effective. Together, we’ll take small steps that lead to big communication gains.
